Why Late Fall Is the Time to Plan a Kitchen Remodel
The kitchen is the room that gets the most use between Thanksgiving and the new year, which is exactly why late October is a good moment to start thinking about a remodel. A kitchen that is out of service is hard to live with during a season built around cooking and hosting, so many homeowners in Montclair and across the Inland Empire use the fall to settle the plan, choose materials and pick a start date that makes sense, rather than rushing into demolition right before a big family meal.
Planning now does not mean the whole project has to finish before the holidays. It means you decide what you want, talk through the scope and timing with a contractor, and choose between finishing before guests arrive or starting once the holidays are behind you.
Two Ways to Approach the Timing
Kitchen remodeling for us covers everything from a cabinet and counter refresh to a full gut, a new layout, plumbing moved, and cabinetry, counters, tile and fixtures set. Those are very different jobs on a calendar, so the first question is which one you have in mind.
A Refresh Before the Holidays
If the layout already works and you want new cabinets, counters, tile and fixtures, the project is mostly about choosing finishes and getting them installed. A scope like this is the easier one to aim at a date ahead of the holidays, as long as you settle on the materials early.
A Full Gut After the New Year
A full gut takes the kitchen back to the framing and rebuilds it with a new layout, moved plumbing, cabinetry, counters, tile and fixtures. It is a longer chain of steps, and it can be a better fit to plan carefully this fall and begin once the holiday season is over, so the family is not without a kitchen during the busiest cooking weeks of the year.
What Goes On Behind the Walls
Many kitchen wishes involve more than surfaces. Opening the room to the rest of the house, moving a sink to an island, or reworking the floor under a new layout all change what sits behind the walls. Because the same crew that handles our foundation and framing work also remodels the kitchen, structural changes like these stay in house instead of being handed to a separate company partway through. Our post on moving walls and plumbing in a kitchen remodel explains how that works in more detail.
Choosing Finishes Early
The materials we work with in kitchens include quartz and stone counters for islands and perimeters, Shaker and custom cabinetry for full kitchens, tile and backsplash for walls and accents, and fixtures and hardware such as faucets, cabinet pulls and lighting. The layout, the cabinets and the counters all depend on each other, so settling on them early keeps the schedule moving once work begins. You can see finished kitchens, including white cabinetry, a waterfall island and a farmhouse sink, on our kitchen remodeling page and in our project gallery.
Questions Worth Thinking Through First
- Is this a refresh of the cabinets and counters, or a full gut with a new layout?
- Would an island or a different sink location make the kitchen work better for you?
- Do any walls or plumbing lines need to move to get the layout you want?
- Do you want the kitchen finished before the holidays, or would you rather start after them?
You do not need final answers before you call. These are the questions we talk through when we go over the scope, the plan and rough timing.
