The Short Answer
Yes. A pergola or patio cover can be attached to an existing house, and attached patio covers anchored to the house are one of the styles we build. The details depend on your home and your yard, so the best first step is to call us at (909) 929-9595, describe the space, and we will talk through what is possible. This post explains how we think about the question.
Attached or Freestanding?
Most homeowners in Montclair and across the Inland Empire start with the same choice: should the structure connect to the house, or stand on its own somewhere in the yard? Both are part of our pergola design work.
Attached Patio Covers
An attached pergola or patio cover is anchored to the house. It extends the living space outward, so the back door opens onto shade instead of open yard. It is a natural fit when you want an outdoor dining or seating area close to the kitchen.
Freestanding Structures
A freestanding pergola can be set anywhere in the yard. That makes sense for a spot away from the house, such as a corner near a pool or a seating area at the far end of the lawn, where the structure does not need to touch the home at all.
Why the Framing Matters
A pergola looks light, but it is a real structure. It has to be squared, plumbed and anchored before any finish goes on, and an attached one has to join the existing house properly. Because the same crew that handles our foundation and framing work builds the pergola structure, that joining work stays with one team instead of being passed between companies.
Choosing the Materials and Style
We build pergolas in several materials and looks, so you can match the structure to the house and the way you use the yard.
- Wood pergolas with open lattice roofs
- Steel and aluminum framing for pergolas and patio covers
- Attached patio covers anchored to the house
- Freestanding structures set anywhere in the yard
You can see a steel framed patio cover and a gable-roofed structure over an outdoor bar and dining area in our project gallery.
Thinking About the Whole Yard
A pergola rarely sits alone. It usually shades a patio, a seating area or a walkway, so it helps to plan the structure and the ground beneath it together. Our hardscaping and outdoor living crew builds paver patios, walkways and seat walls, and if a pool is part of the plan, our pool construction page shows how the deck and surrounding yard come together as one project.
Questions Worth Thinking Through First
- Do you want the shade right outside the back door, or in a separate spot in the yard?
- Which look fits your home: an open wood lattice, or a steel or aluminum frame?
- What will sit underneath: dining, lounge seating, an outdoor bar or a walkway?
You do not need final answers before you call. They are simply what we will talk through with you.
